Still More Cicadas Found at St. Patrick Cemetery
8:15 AM - I found a newly emerged Cicada on one of the Ash trees I have been visiting a lot lately. This Ash tree is the tree where I discovered my first 2 T. lyricen Cicadas of the year and the one that Mickey said was diseased. No deformities on this T. canicularis. I find 2 others on a pine tree. I noticed one Cicada on a Maple tree that failed to emerge from the shell properly. It's head is missing. I noticed that a wasp landed on it and seemed to be taking pieces away. Unfortuately I

Many Cicada Tenerals at St. Patrick Cemetery
9:15 pm - Back again. I'm in Cicada heaven this evening. Tons of Cicadas on many different types of trees. All seem to be T. canicularis however. Not a single one is T. lyricen. I'm finding a lot on Pine trees and some on Ash, Oak and Maple. I even find 5 nymphs. All also look like T. canicularis though some are bigger than others. Took many pictures at the cemetery and collected 6 cicada specimens. Two were even deformed including one that was still stuck in the nymph shell by it's hi

Videos of Stuck Cicadas and the Eclose Process
11:00 am - It's lightly drizzling outside today but the T. lyricen Cicadas are still singing. This is truly a first, I've never known Cicadas to sing in a light rain. I walk around to my favorite spots for Cicadas. I noticed another T. canicularis on a pine tree that was stuck in the middle of the molting process. It's stuck in a similar postition as the one discovered the day before. Click on the thumbnail to the right to see a short video clip of this Cicada. Notice how black the nymph sh

Many Deformed Cicadas at St. Patrick Cemetery
11:00 AM - I took a few days off to get some work done on this web site but I finally make it back to St. Patrick Cemetery. I make the usual rounds on my favorite Ash trees and I discover one cicada partially emerged from its shell. I watch this one intently but it looks stuck. It cannot complete the molt process and is only partially emerged. The thumbnail to the right is a link to a movie file that I took on this guy. The sound quality kinda sucks because the wind was really b

Morning After Visits to Pine Ridge and St. Patrick
10:30 am - With my poor luck the night before here, I decided to try my luck at Pine Ridge Cemetery during the day. I searched practically the entire cemetery with no luck. Just as I was about to leave, I found a female T. canicularis at the base of a pine tree. Too bad every picture I took of it came out rather blurry so I'm sorry to report I have no photos for you. St. Patrick Cemetery - Lowell, MA. 11:49 am - While at St. Patrick, I decided to check the Oak tree where I found the little

Night-time Cemetery Visits
9:45 pm - I decided to head to Pine Ridge and try my luck here. I found many signs of exuvia on many trees with the majority of them being pine. No Cicadas molting however as it is a very cool evening. The shells I'm seeing may be a result of daytime molting. Since the exuvia were on pine trees I am going to assume that these are nymph shells left behind by Tibicen canicularis. Night Visit Number 2 St. Patrick Cemetery - Lowell, MA. 10:42 pm - With no luck at Pine Ridge I decid

Pine Ridge Cemetery - Some Place New!
8:00 am - Pine Ridge Cemetery is a new cemetery I discovered while driving around looking for new places. It is located just off of Chelmsford Center on Rte 129. It looked pretty big so I decided to drive in and take a look. I did find 6 exuvia on various pine and Maple trees but no Cicadas today. I noticed over by the cemetery office there was a guy sort of standing around having a smoke and watching what I was doing. He was the only one there so I decided to go over and introduce myself. I f
