Cicada Killer in Foxborough, Ma?

Unfortunately, I thought it was a hostile wasp as it was buzzing around my head in my basement so I killed it. Believe it was a female (saw a stinger).

I was in my screen house and something caught my eye. It was a large insect coming out of a cocoon. It looked frightening and yet awesome at the same time. I put it in a container for now. Can I set it free? Please advise. Thank you, Betty
