found in our back yard and it is a male we are guessing he just mated.

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for your photo. It is difficult to tell gender of this cicada killer wasp but I see that the pseudo stinger is not present at the very tip of the abdomen. In male cicada killers they have this pseudo stinger which probably is an evolutionary remnant from a time when they probably could sting but who knows? I actually think this may be a female that is at the end of its life cycle. After completing its mission of hunting cicadas for its larva it seems to me that its just about time to die. Thanks for sharing this image.
