Play M. septendecim chorus Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-06-01
Description: After three quarters through the state of Indiana, I managed to stumble upon a very small chorus of M. septendecim. I found a small park many miles outside Valparaiso, Indiana called "Stony Run County Park" In LeRoy, Indiana. It is part of the Lake County parks system. This place was approximately 10 miles off of Route 30 west in Indiana. It took me around 20 minutes to get there.

Tibicen lyricen calling song

Play T. lyricen calling video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2005-09-05
Description: This video was taken of a Tibicen lyricen cicada calling in a group of small trees in a nursery in Northern Connecticut. T. lyricen cicadas are very abundant in New England. They do exhibit some strange behaviors like calling while walking along the branch of a tree. I have even noted them calling in flight as well. On this day, I netted a male T. lyricen with a large extension net, it walked right onto the net and continued to call all the way to the ground and only stopped calling when I grabbed it. Then it let out a rather large alarm squawk. I guess I totally surprised it.

Tibicen canicularis plays dead.

Watch canicularis plays dead Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2005-08-25
Description: This video shows an unusual defense mechanism sometimes exhibited in adult cicadas. The art of playing dead. While not all cicadas exhibit this behavior, in those that do, this behavior seems to be a carry-over from nymph form into adult form by the same cicadas. Even among the same species, this behavior is not always apparent.

Another Cicada Killer Orientation Video

Watch cicada killer orientation video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2005-08-02
Description: This video shows how the female cicada killer orients itself to it's burrow entrance. It makes a series of longer and longer flights away from the burrow entrance. It does this in a series of maneuvers from all directions. In this way, when it returns carrying a paralized cicada, it knows the exact location of the burrow entrance and any barriers in its pat. However, if certain objects weren't there when it was performing this behavior and the object suddenly appears while it is away; like a human being, if you are in its path when it is returning the cicada killer will no doubt crash right into you because when it originally oriented itself, you weren't part of the equation!
