Cicada Calling Songs Videos

About the Calling Songs Video Category

All cicada calling songs have been placed in this video section. You may notice that there seems to be multiple calling songs for the same species. This is intentional because most of these songs come from different parts of the United States and may hold clues into regional calling variations from the same species. Think of them as "different accents".

You can navigate through these videos by the page navigation towards the bottom. Clicking on a thumbnail with a play icon will launch the video player in a modal window. Under each video is a comment form if you would like to leave a comment or ask questions.

Single Magicicada cassini male call

Watch M. cassini male calling video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-08
Description: Searching my videos I realized that I do not have a video of a single M. cassini calling. During our cicada experiments with the Periodical cicadas in 2007 at Jubilee College State Park, I managed to shoot a video of just such a thing. Search the videos in the chorusing category for M. cassini choruses and have a listen. Now listen to this single individual calling on its own. When you get an aggregation of thousands of individual M. cassini singing in the same location, the calling song of a single individual is quite different.

Second Stage Decim Call

Watch second stage M. decim calling video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-02
Description: While at Del Mar Woods, Lake County Forest Preserve in Illinois, I was able to observe the secondary mating call of a male M. septendecim as they would try to court another cicada. It didn't even matter if the other cicada was another male M. septendecim! It was interesting to note that there were many females in the low-lying branches all around the males but they didn't seem to be interested in mating.

Single M. septendecim Male Calling Song

Play movie Single M. septendecim calling Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-02
Description: One of my first M. septendecim Periodical cicada recordings. This video was taken outside Chicago in the town of Deerfield, Illinois during the Brood XIII periodical cicada emergence in 2007. This video was taken back before I knew how to do the whistle followed the simulated wing-flick response. Still, a very cool video.

Tibicen tibicen calling in N. Chelmsford

Play T. tibicen calling in N. Chelmsford video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-09-02
Description: This is a voucher video showing that T. tibicen is known to call in my neighborhood of N. Chelmsford. From 2005 to 2007 a single male was heard calling and flying northward towards New Hampshire. It was probably following the Merrimack River. It is unclear if these events were the result of a tree from another state being brought from the south where T. tibicen is abundant and subsequently planted in our neighborhood somewhere.

Tibicen robinsonianus calling song

Tibicen robinsonianus calling song Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-09-02
Description: Sound file provided by Roy Troutman. Image provided by Bill Reynolds. While not native to New England Tibicen robinsonianus is more readily available in the south eastern and and some southwestern parts of the United States. It is believed that this species is a result of hybridization between T. linnei and T. canicularis. I tend to disagree.
