Cicada Ovipositing Videos

About the Ovipositing Video Category

Ovipositing is the act of a female cicada laying eggs. Cicadas of the genus Tibicen have a propensity to oviposit in dead wood like dead tree branches, bark or twigs. Sometimes they'll even oviposit in wooden railings or fence posts. Other female species like Magicicadas and Okanagana will oviposit in live wood. The goal here is to try and document multiple female cicada species and what they oviposit in.

Magicicada septendicem female ovipositing

Watch M. septendecim ovipositing video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2004-06-06
Description: This female was driven from West Virginia over 510 miles and recorded in my home here in Massachusetts. I collected many live specimens for my return journey home to photograph and record in a controlled setting. I wanted to get some lilac clippings from a bush in my yard to give my photographs a more realistic appearance. I was surprised that after the stress of driving over 500 miles to my home that this female began to oviposit in the lilac clipping. It must have mated with a male of the same species prior to capture. Magicicada love to oviposit in live wood. You will also hear in this video a single male M. septendecula calling out of the camera's view.
