Tibicen lyricen alarm squawk video 1

Play T. lyricen alarm squawk Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-08-12
Description: Shortly after catching this specimen on Martha's Vineyard at the Peaked Hill Wildlife refuge, I immediately decided to record the alarm squawk. This specimen had a ripped front forewing thus relegating it to the confines of tall underbrush well below the tree canopy very close to the ground. It didn't deter it from calling as any other normal T. lyricen cicada however.

Description: Video of another T. lyricen obtained at Peaked Hill Wildlife Refuge on Martha's Vineyard. This specimen was calling on a branch 12 feet high and just walked right onto my net and while lowering it down to eye level, it continued to call constantly. Imagine it's surprise when all-of-a-sudden, it was grabbed thus launching it into its alarm squawk.

Tibicen tibicen alarm squawk

Watch T. tibicen alarm squawk video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-08-05
Description: Often times when male cicadas are captured (especially the mature wild-caught ones) will often times let out an alarm squawk. It is thought that this loud squawking (caused by the timbals in males) is to startle a potential predator into dropping it, affording the cicada the ability to fly away. Since a cicada's calling song is species-specific, I like to record the alarm squawks of individual males that I have captured for future analysis.

Tibicen canicularis plays dead.

Watch canicularis plays dead Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2005-08-25
Description: This video shows an unusual defense mechanism sometimes exhibited in adult cicadas. The art of playing dead. While not all cicadas exhibit this behavior, in those that do, this behavior seems to be a carry-over from nymph form into adult form by the same cicadas. Even among the same species, this behavior is not always apparent.

Description: Video by Kevin H. Bonnett of a Tibicen linnei (or possibly Tibicen pruinosus) being eaten by a Praying Mantis. This video is truly amazing in that the mantis has hold of each cicada wing and the cicada is furiously trying to escape.
