Second Stage M. septendecim call
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-07
Description: First demonstrated by Professor John Cooley - formerly of U.C. Connecticut at Storrs - Magicicda septendecim have 3 distinct calling song stages. The first stage is for general chorusing and the other two are for courtship rituals. John has learned methods to mimick female wing-flick response to male first stage calling songs in order to entice males to the third and final call involved with mating. This video demonstrates the second stage calling behavior. Note: John got one male cicada to get interested in another male cicada!

Experimenting With Cicadas
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-07
Description: Studying cicadas has afforded me the opportunity to meet some very interesting people. During the Brood XIII periodical cicada emergence, I worked with the University of Connecticut at Storrs and the US Navy on some experiments involving cicadas. It was a whole group effort and involved lots of people. The parks people at Jubilee College State Park allowed us to use an old abandoned barn on the park grounds in which to conduct experiments. Sorry, while I can show the video, I'm not allowed to discuss the nature of the experiments.

Second Stage Decim Call
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-02
Description: While at Del Mar Woods, Lake County Forest Preserve in Illinois, I was able to observe the secondary mating call of a male M. septendecim as they would try to court another cicada. It didn't even matter if the other cicada was another male M. septendecim! It was interesting to note that there were many females in the low-lying branches all around the males but they didn't seem to be interested in mating.
