M. cassini aggregation in Indiana 2007
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-01
Description: This video is of an aggregation of M. cassini calling in a single tree in a neighborhood in Crowne Point Indiana. I had to travel nearly three quarters through the state of Indiana in order to find indications of Periodical cicadas. While I couldn't cover the entire state, there may be indications further south and West of Crowne point that there are still healthy populations but I won't know that for another 17 years. Historically, in Indiana Brood XIII used to cover a much larger geographic area and used to be found in Michigan but they have been extirpated from that state. I should know, I spent a very long time in Michigan trying to find them!

Tibicen tibicen calling in N. Chelmsford
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-09-02
Description: This is a voucher video showing that T. tibicen is known to call in my neighborhood of N. Chelmsford. From 2005 to 2007 a single male was heard calling and flying northward towards New Hampshire. It was probably following the Merrimack River. It is unclear if these events were the result of a tree from another state being brought from the south where T. tibicen is abundant and subsequently planted in our neighborhood somewhere.

Tibicen robinsonianus calling song
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-09-02
Description: Sound file provided by Roy Troutman. Image provided by Bill Reynolds. While not native to New England Tibicen robinsonianus is more readily available in the south eastern and and some southwestern parts of the United States. It is believed that this species is a result of hybridization between T. linnei and T. canicularis. I tend to disagree.

Tibicen auletes Alarm Squawk
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-08-13
Description: One of my primary goals during the cicada survey work on Martha's Vineyard was to get a voucher specimen of T. auletes. On my final day there, I managed to capture one at the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest located at the center of the island. T. auletes has one of the loudest alarm squawks of American Tibicen cicadas.

Tibicen lyricen alarm squawk video 1
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-08-12
Description: Shortly after catching this specimen on Martha's Vineyard at the Peaked Hill Wildlife refuge, I immediately decided to record the alarm squawk. This specimen had a ripped front forewing thus relegating it to the confines of tall underbrush well below the tree canopy very close to the ground. It didn't deter it from calling as any other normal T. lyricen cicada however.

Tibicen lyricen alarm squawk video 2
Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2006-08-12
Description: Video of another T. lyricen obtained at Peaked Hill Wildlife Refuge on Martha's Vineyard. This specimen was calling on a branch 12 feet high and just walked right onto my net and while lowering it down to eye level, it continued to call constantly. Imagine it's surprise when all-of-a-sudden, it was grabbed thus launching it into its alarm squawk.
