Experimenting With Cicadas

Watch experimenting with cicadas video Author: Massachusetts Cicadas
Published On: 2007-06-07
Description: Studying cicadas has afforded me the opportunity to meet some very interesting people. During the Brood XIII periodical cicada emergence, I worked with the University of Connecticut at Storrs and the US Navy on some experiments involving cicadas. It was a whole group effort and involved lots of people. The parks people at Jubilee College State Park allowed us to use an old abandoned barn on the park grounds in which to conduct experiments. Sorry, while I can show the video, I'm not allowed to discuss the nature of the experiments.

Published On: 2007-06-07
Description: This video during our experiments with cicadas show's Mike Neckermann from Connecticut trying to get the cicada to call with a light switch that simulates a wing flick. That's me whistling behind the camera to simulate a M. septendecim call. Look at Mike's face. That's a face only a mother could love. Just kidding Mike. Sorry, while I can show the video, I'm not allowed to discuss the nature of the experiments.

Tibicen Teneral Cicada Breathing

Play Tibicen cicada breathing video. Author: Roy Troutman
Published On: 2006-07-22
Description: Another cool contribution from Roy Troutman. A cicada (and most insects for that matter) breath through their abdomens through little openings known as "spiracles". When in teneral form, you can really see the large spiracles working that are located laterally on the abdomen. A very cool video.
