Brood XIV Periodical Cicadas Latest Stuff
Hi Folks, I apologize for the lack of updates. So I thought I'd head this update with a little bit of cicada humor. I've just been totally busy with the whole Brood XIV event. It looks like Cape Cod is now in full swing regarding the emergence. You can look for the emergence to start to wind down over the next couple of weeks. I would suggest you go out and experience it while you still can because they won't be around again for another 17 years. Distribution Maps have been updated.

Brood XIV Survey Continues on Cape Cod
Today was another productive day on Cape Cod. I arrived in the Mashpee area on Park Road and my friend Lisa had 10 Magicicada tenerals waiting for me. We spent several hours today walking around her neighborhood noting where Magicicadas were emerging. I managed to snap a ton of photos. Rather than posting individual thumbnail links to larger photos for you to click on, I decided to put a slideshow together. Click the thumbnail below to launch the show. It's approximately 2 minutes and 55 second

Today's Brood XIV Survey of Cape Cod
I returned to Cape Cod today to see what there was to see. I headed east on 6A and stopped at a place known as Murkwood Conservation Lands in East Sandwich. I walked around along the trails for a while but spotted no signs whatsoever. Some parts of Sandwich may be cicada free. I had an idea that I wanted to spend time at Hyannis Ponds Wildlife management area which can be reached via Mary Dunn Road in Hyannis. I spent a lot of time here. I'm glad I brought my mountain bike again. It sure

Various Brood XIV Updates
Today, a report was recieved from the Report Brood XIV Periodical Cicadas that Long Island is finally starting to see the Periodical Cicadas emerging. Like Massachusetts, finally the Pink and Yellow Pips noted on the map can be changed to Red. I suspect as time goes on we'll be getting in more reports. The Massachusetts Distribution Map Has Been Broken Out! I decided in order to save you the time of zooming in on Massachusetts, I separated it out from the main Brood XIV distribution ma

Periodical Cicadas Found in Forestdale
Well, three days off of my prediction isn't bad really! Thanks to my good friend Lisa from Mashpee, who sent in a report of the first adult cicadas found along with a bunch of exuvia on West Road in Forestdale. I suspect that this evening we will see a lot of nymphs emerging from the ground. If you spot any please remember to report in! Areas on the map which were pink to indicate immature nymph sightings will need to be rechecked and marked with a red pip to indicate full adult sightings.

More Brood XIV Survey Work on Cape Cod
Yesterday (Sunday 5/25) I drove back to the Cape and concentrated along the western edge and worked my way inland. I stopped in Bourne, Monument Beach, Gray Gables and N. Pocasset. I did attempt to go into Falmouth but there wasn't any place I could look. Everywhere is private property so this area will have to wait unless someone submits a sighting report. I got a mixed bag of results including some negatives where I found no signs of periodical cicadas whatsoever. Where I found negatives (indi

First Survey of Cape Cod Today - Brood XIV
After receiving so many reports of immature nymph sightings on Cape Cod and since this is Memorial Day weekend, I decided to take the opportunity to head down to the Cape to see what's doin'. Actually the ride wasn't all that bad, it took 1.5 hours to go from Northern Massachusetts to the Cape. There was no traffic on the roads at all. I guess leaving at 6:00am helped or perhaps the tourists headed down after work on the previous evening or its the recent increases in the cost of fuel. Whatever

More Magicicada Sightings Reported
Well, it's been a slow start to the emergence. Reports are being received from Kentucky, Tenessee, North Carolina and Ohio indicating that periodical cicadas in all forms including tenerals, nymphs and adults with even a few calling are being reported. Its been unusually cool this spring so this has no-doubt delayed the emergence. Brood XIV Distribution Map Updated. The map is a compiled list of sightings that have come in through the Report Brood XIV periodical cicadas form. Hopeful

Immature Magicicada Nymphs Found
Thanks to a very pleasant reader who submitted the below Periodical Cicada immature nymphs in the Dix Hills area on Long Island. These look like M. septendecim nymphs judging by those mud chimneys. Click on the thumbnails below for a bigger picture. The reader also reports that an over-abundance of birds are located all over the property feasting on the nymphs. It looks like the process known as "predator satiation" has started early. Only Probable Spe
