Deformed Magicicadas - Mashpee, MA

Hi -

I just added a photo of a Cicada sighting. I had the opportunity to read through the info you have posted on deformities and thought you might be interested in these other 3 photos. These were all taken in the same area on the side of my house.

Thanks for keeping such an interesting web site! I've never seen cicadas before so naturally I had many questions and your site answered them all!

Best Regards,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for filling in our online form. Yes, deformed Magicicadas seem to be par-for-the-course when it comes to a Periodical Cicada emergence.

There's a multitude of reasons why this happens but it assures that only the healthiest and most fit periodical cicadas - if they haven't been eaten by predators first - get to survive and mate thus assuring the continuance of the Brood.

Thanks for your photos.
