Tibicen cicada in Weare, NH

My wife saw the cicada on our bee balm plant...bright sunny day hot and Slightly humid..we live next to a ninety year old forest..not far from lake...maybe four hundred yards. Oak trees,maples,birches,white and red pine, some spruce.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the cool photo of a Tibicen canicularis cicada. This species is pretty wide spread and can be found throughout New England. The male's calling song I liken to sounding like a buzz-saw on helium. Other species found in your area are Okanagana rimosa and Okanagana canadensis and to a lesser extent, Tibicen lyricen.
