Tibicen tibicen in West Hartford, CT

Someone in my office found what looks like a Tibicen Lyricen, outside our front door. Are these normal in this area?

Thanks,
Karen

Hi Karen,

This is not a Tibicen lyricen cicada but actually a cicada known as Tibicen tibicen (formerly Tibicen chloromeus). While T. tibicen is common in the south, it is not as common here in New England but out of all the New England states, T. tibicen seems to be in high abundance in the Hartford/Whethersfield area.

This guy looks like it got stepped on.
