Dear Mary,
This is truly exciting. You have managed to capture an image of a very rare cicada that is not readily seen on Cape Cod. The specimen is that of a Tibicen tibicen cicada. While these cicadas are in high abundance in Connecticut, I have heard or seen very few of this species of cicada in Massachusetts. This one looks to be a female.
Can you give me a bit more information as to how you found it? Did it stay on the fence for a long time? This is really significant!

Hi Gerry,
Oh, I am so excited too!!
Maybe it hitched a ride w/ a tourist over the Sagamore Bridge! Here are more specific details:
I was on my west facing deck ( that overlooks the golf course here @ 'GCYP' & saw it fly onto the railing & w/ my handy phone camera was able to get very close to it w/out disturbing it & snap the pic.
It did nothing for a long while then finally flew away!
